It depends on the person and the location of the tattoo. Sometimes a tattoo can look healed on the surface but the layers under the skin are still being repaired.

Two months is on the longer spectrum of healing time by most standards, but it’s a good rule of thumb to make extra sure your skin has fully healed — we say this because products with SPF can irritate healing skin, so the two-month mark is a good rule of thumb to be extra-sure your skin has fully recovered.

After Your Tattoo

Healing your tattoo is the most important part of the tattoo process, follow these steps provided precisely and you will protect your investment for futures to come!

If you have any questions, please call us a 603.227.6912 or visit the shop. Please do not consult your friends or social media about healing issues, as everyone’s experience is unique. We are more then happy to help with any concerns you might have!

1. Remove bandage in a clean bathroom after 1-2 hours (make sure your hands are clean first) Bandage can stay on for the first night, make sure it feels comfortable and secure. If the bandage is removed on the first night, the tattoo may stain or stick to your sheets. Maintain clean bedding throughout the healing process (about 2 weeks).

2. After removing the bandage, wash the tattoo immediately with warm water and an unscented liquid hand soap. We recommend plain Dial gold soap. No bar soap, fragranced soap, dish soap or scrubs.

3. Gently clean the tattoo using a circular motion, until all ointment, blood or lymphatic fluid is removed. Rinse the tattoo and wash again, gently, until the skin is clean, rinse with cold water and then dab dry with a clean paper towel. No washcloths, bath towels, sponges, or loofahs on a fresh tattoo.

4. Once the tattoo is dry apply a small amount of AQUAPHOR ointment or ointment provided by us only. Rub the ointment in, then dab excess ointment off with a clean paper towel. Use the ointment for the first 3 days, then switch to a regular FRAGRANCE FREE lotion such as LUBRIDERM, or any other fragrance free brand until the tattoo is fully healed (about 2-4 weeks).

5. Repeat cleaning and applying ointment 3-4 times a day, remember to keep your hands clean every time when cleaning the tattoo.

6. After a few days your tattoo will begin to form flaky scabs that will fall off on their own. DO NOT PICK OR SCRATCH THE TATTOO. Keep it moisturized and the scabs will come off eventually. It normally takes about 2-4 weeks for a tattoo to completely heal.

1. Keep the adhesive bandage on for 24 hours, the tattoo may leak out of the bandage due to gravity. Dab the blood/ fluid with a clean paper towel.

2. After 24 hours remove the tattoo bandage in the shower, slowly pulling downward until the bandage is removed. Clean the tattoo with an unscented liquid hand soap, dab dry and let air dry for 5 minutes. No ointment is needed if applying another bandage.

3. Apply a second bandage and leave it on for 48 hrs. After the 48 hours remove the bandage, clean the tattoo with warm water and unscented soap, dab dry and apply a FRAGRANCE FREE LOTION. Clean the tattoo 3-4 times a day and apply lotion when the tattoo feels dry with clean hands.

Yes! It’s perfectly normal for a tattoo to peel like a sunburn — and itch like a sunburn. Make sure you resist the temptation to scratch or peel off the skin as that can pull out your ink. Rather, let the skin flake off on its own.

No, this is a natural part of a healing tattoo. The top layer of dead skin has been colored or dyed during the tattooing process. That outer layer will fall off revealing the fresh skin underneath.

A tattoo is VERY bright when it is first completed but during the healing process, it starts to look discolored and dull. Don’t worry, when the tattoo is finished healing, the color will come back.

Yes! Scabbing is typically normal and happens during the healing process of a tattoo. Just like any open wound, your body is creating its natural defense to guard it against infection while the skin underneath repairs itself. If the skin does scab, it’s very important that you don’t pick or pull at the scabs since that can pull out your ink and in some extreme cases, lead to scarring.

It sounds like the tattoo is leaching. When too much aftercare is applied, the body will naturally try to push whatever is on top off so it can breathe. Wash the tattoo off and pat it dry. Do not put anything on it for one day. After that, start using Tattoo Goo® Lotion around three times a day—be sure not to over apply. Continue using the lotion until it heals completely. It may scab a bit, but do not pick the scabs—let them fall off naturally.

Sunscreen should not be used on a healing tattoo as it has many chemicals that can cause adverse reactions. You should keep the tattoo out of the sun until it is completely healed. Most artists recommend two weeks or more. After it is healed, you should always use sunscreen.

It is recommended to wait at least two to three weeks after getting a tattoo before swimming. This allows enough time for the tattoo to heal and reduces the risk of infection. However, it is best to follow the advice of your tattoo artist and doctor, as healing times can vary depending on the individual and the tattoo’s size and location.

It is not recommended to swim in chlorine after getting a tattoo until the tattoo is fully healed. Chlorine can cause irritation and dryness of the skin, making it
harder for the tattoo to heal. Additionally, chlorine can fade the tattoo ink and cause the tattoo to look less vibrant.

It is not recommended to swim with a new tattoo until the tattoo is fully healed. Swimming can expose the tattooed area to bacteria and other harmful organisms, which can increase the risk of infection. It is important to keep the tattoo clean and dry during the healing process to ensure proper healing. Getting a tattoo is a significant decision, and it is important to take proper care of the tattooed area to ensure proper healing and reduce the risk of infection. Swimming after getting a tattoo should be avoided until the tattoo is fully healed, which usually takes around two to three weeks.

It is also important to avoid swimming in chlorine or other harsh chemicals, which can cause damage to the tattooed area and fade the ink. By following the advice of your tattoo artist and doctor, you can ensure a safe and successful healing process for your new tattoo.

It is not recommended you go to the gym until the tattoo is fully healed, about two weeks. The gym has a lot of bacteria from people sharing equipment, sweat, and not cleaning equipment. It is okay to do minor exercises like walking and stretching. Just make sure you are not stretching the fresh tattooed area it can cause problems healing and loss of color.

It is also important to avoid swimming in chlorine or other harsh chemicals, which can cause damage to the tattooed area and fade the ink. By following the advice of your tattoo artist and doctor, you can ensure a safe and successful healing process for your new tattoo.
